Major Life Updates: HOOPS

2022 Was such a beautiful surprise in so many ways. As you may or may not know, I was in and out of the hospital most of 2021 due to heart failure. It took a long time for my health to stabilize and for me to process all the trauma surrounding that year. I slowly regained strength and while healing I still remained committed to continuing the HOOPS Project. This project has been my everything and I wasn’t ready to give up on it. So, I began the planning and organizing to get us to Los Angeles. After meeting with Las Fotos Project, I was able to secure our shooting location and began the open call. It was truly a dream come true. I spent two days in Boyle Heights, meeting some of the most amazing people who cared deeply about this project. The stories and images that came out of Boyle Heights became the inspiration I needed to keep going. I was blown away!

To this point, I had five cities now documented and a breadth of work to finally put out into the world I could really feel proud of. At the same time, I was working with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre to produce the world premiere of the HOOPS stage play adaptation. Yes, my HOOPS Project has been turned into a stage play! Never in a million years did I ever think that would happen. Additionally, I secured a solo photography exhibition at Milwaukee Artist Resource Network (MARN). Finally, HOOPS will get the show it deserves. Then, just when I thought HOOPS had reached its peak in Milwaukee, I was named a 2023 Pfister Artist in Residence(AIR) Finalist!

I’ve been working non-stop behind the scenes preparing for both the show openings and to present my work for the AIR. If you’re reading this, thank you so much for visiting my website and for supporting me and the culmination of this work. I hope to see you soon at one or all of the upcoming events! -Nicole
